The Alberta Oil Sands (Saudi Arabia of the North) as it is proudly refered to in the oil industry has proven to be a financial boom to the Canadian economy. It has also proven to be an environmental nightmare. ................................. more info:http://www.2solitudes.com/articles/57/1/The-Alberta-Oil-Sands-Canadian-Prosperity---Global-Nightmare.html ............................... Teck Resources has decided to postpone a $20 billion oil sands project in Alberta. Low oil prices and increasingly high labour costs didn't help, but Ezra Levant of TheRebel.media says it's obvious the final straw was the province's new NDP government. It's no surprise. Premier Notley has hired a disciple of Al Gore to review oil royalties, hiked taxes and took other steps to send an unmistakable anti-energy message. Yet the media isn't treating this project shutdown like the disaster it is. Can you imagine if all the big car companies shut down Ontario operations overnight? On May 25, 2010, Augustana unveiled 10 solar-thermal panels on the roof of our Convocation Centre. The panels will end up relieving 20 to 30 per cent of the Cafeteria and Gym's water-heating requirements that formerly relied exclusively on non-renewable sources. This project speaks to the triple bottom line of sustainability: environmental, economic and social sustainability. The use of this viable, renewable resource is one of the environmental benefits of such a project. Economic benefits will be seen as soon as the energy savings exceed the capital cost of the project. Finally, as an academic institution there is great potential for learning from this technology and leading by example within our community and beyond. With this project and many others like it, Augustana is demonstrati...

Holly Nicholas reports, BlackPearl Resources is just the latest example of a Calgary company that has chosen to set up production in neighbouring Saskatchewan instead of Alberta thanks to the Notley NDP's hostile business climate. 2016-17 CADS Alberta Slide & Ride Program, supported through our primary funding agency in MAKADIFF Sports, provides snowsports, including alpine skiing and snowboarding, to simply provide an opportunity for adaptive individuals, made up of primarily children, but certainly all age groups; to discover the fun that can be attained while taking part in physical activity, emotional learning and social engagement in a fully inclusive setting, in which family and friends are invited to be active participants. The video provides a series of vignettes that allow parents, and volunteers to tell the stories of why the CADS Alberta Slide & Ride program was an instrumental program in allowing families to discover the potential that snowsports can offer in opening a door to outdoor activity in a safe,...
In March 2015, representatives from Alberta’s four crop commissions: Alberta Barley, Alberta Canola Producers’ Commission, Alberta Pulse Growers and the Alberta Wheat Commission underwent on-farm assessments in three major, internationally recognized sustainability certification programs. Third-party sustainability auditors from Control Union Certifications spent a half day on each farm completing an assessment that reflected the requirements of all three programs in one questionnaire. Most beautiful place in Canada is hands down Lake Louise in Alberta with its azure blue waters and giant glaciers. I went for a 11 hours hike through rough terrain, snow, ice and steep climbs covering 17.3 kilometers. My Survival Guide can be found on my blog: http://www.reformatt.com/survival-guide-lake-louise I was lucky not running into any flesh hungry bears during my solo hike on the way back down. It was a huge mistake not bringing bear spray. It’s been a year since Greenroofs.com concluded our third Greenroofs & Walls of the World Virtual Summit: Connecting the Planet + Living Architecture, and as promised, we are now releasing the 23 videos from our 30+ international speakers to the general public. While some myths about the suitability of green roofs in Alberta persist given the challenging and extreme climate; that is, long, cold winters, extreme sun paths, a short growing season and low levels of precipitation, this presentation includes a range of case study projects in four of the province’s six main eco-regions. These projects employ different proprietary systems with distinct expressions and objectives. The characteristics, design intent, plant species selection and maintenance requirements of these case studies are ...

We currently don’t know the value of the rangeland services in existence in Alberta. ABMI’s newest project is currently working to fill this knowledge gap. The goal is to develop a system to assess and map ecosystem services across Alberta to better understand how planning and management decisions affect the landscape, and increase benefits to Albertans. This mapping will be open sourced and available to everyone. This project will help people determine how much different ecosystems servi...

What does it mean to be patient- centred in healthcare and why does it matter? That’s what Art Frank, professor emeritus of sociology at the University of Calgary and professor at Betanien College, Bergen, Norway, tackled as he addressed the nearly 400 participants who attended the launch forum for the IMAGINE Project at the Foothills Campus on Jan. 22, 2015. The system is patient-centred when providers understand that everything they do is about THE patient, the individual on the other end of the conversation, said Frank. “Healthcare is patient-centred when it recognizes the particular needs of specific people and when it’s willing to adapt institutional procedures, protocols to fit those individual needs,” he explained. That is the ideal, but not always the reality, added Frank, who ...
