Holly Nicholas reports, BlackPearl Resources is just the latest example of a Calgary company that has chosen to set up production in neighbouring Saskatchewan instead of Alberta thanks to the Notley NDP's hostile business climate. Teck Resources has decided to postpone a $20 billion oil sands project in Alberta. Low oil prices and increasingly high labour costs didn't help, but Ezra Levant of TheRebel.media says it's obvious the final straw was the province's new NDP government. It's no surprise. Premier Notley has hired a disciple of Al Gore to review oil royalties, hiked taxes and took other steps to send an unmistakable anti-energy message. Yet the media isn't treating this project shutdown like the disaster it is. Can you imagine if all the big car companies shut down Ontario operations overnight? The Alberta Saline Aquifer Project (ASAP) is an industry initiative being led by Enbridge Inc. to identify deep saline aquifers in Alberta that could be used in a carbon sequestration pilot project. ASAP is a true collaborative effort and 38 organizations have participated in the project's first phase. Saline aquifers are deep underground formations that contain brine or salt water that is not suitable for drinking or agricultural purposes. Once suitable aquifers have been identified, they can be injected with carbon dioxide - and then carefully monitored to ensure that their integrity remains intact. For more information on ASAP, please visit albertaasap.com

In March 2015, representatives from Alberta’s four crop commissions: Alberta Barley, Alberta Canola Producers’ Commission, Alberta Pulse Growers and the Alberta Wheat Commission underwent on-farm assessments in three major, internationally recognized sustainability certification programs. These programs included: International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) Plus, Unilever’s Sustainable Agriculture Code (ULSAC) as well as Sustainable Agriculture Initiative whose members include: Heineken, Anheuser-Busch, ABInbev, Kellogg’s, General Mills and a host of others. Third-party sustainability auditors from Control Union Certifications spent a half day on each farm completing an assessment that reflected the requirements of all three programs in one questionnaire.
